Cinnamon overnight oats with grated apple and pecans in a Nestware glass oats jar on a winter morning

Cinnamon Overnight Oats (The Cosy Winter One)

Nestware Kitchen

January mornings are dark, cold and generally rude. This is the breakfast we make for them.

Our cinnamon overnight oats are the cosiest thing you can eat without turning the hob on. You stir everything together in two minutes the night before, and by morning the oats have soaked up the milk and gone thick, creamy and gently spiced, like a bowl of apple crumble that's decided to be sensible.

We make ours in the Nestware overnight oats jar. The steel lid doubles as a 50g scoop, which happens to be exactly one portion of oats, so there's no faffing with scales when you're half asleep.

Cinnamon Overnight Oats (The Cosy Winter One)

Serves: 1 jarPrep: 5 minChill: at least 4 hours or overnight

Ingredients

  • 50g rolled oats (one Nestware lid scoop)
  • 120ml milk of your choice
  • 60g natural or Greek yoghurt
  • 1 tsp maple syrup or honey, plus extra to serve
  • ½ tsp ground cinnamon
  • A pinch of nutmeg (optional)
  • 1 tsp chia seeds (optional, for extra thickness)
  • A small pinch of salt

To top

  • ½ apple, grated or finely chopped
  • A handful of toasted pecans or walnuts
  • An extra dusting of cinnamon

Method

  1. Scoop 50g oats into the jar using the lid. Add the cinnamon, nutmeg, chia seeds and salt and give it a quick stir so the spice doesn't clump.
  2. Pour in the milk, then add the yoghurt and maple syrup. Stir well, scraping the bottom of the jar so there are no dry pockets of oats.
  3. Press the silicone seal on, close the lid and pop it in the fridge for at least 4 hours, or overnight.
  4. In the morning, give it a stir. If it's thicker than you like, loosen with a splash of milk.
  5. Top with grated apple, toasted nuts and an extra drizzle of maple. Eat cold, or tip into a bowl and warm in the microwave for a minute if it's one of those mornings.

Little tips from us

  • For a thicker, creamy texture, use equal parts oats and milk by volume. The yoghurt then makes it properly spoonable.
  • Toast the nuts in a dry pan for two minutes. It's the difference between "nice" and "ooh".
  • Grate the apple in the morning, not the night before, or it goes brown. A rotary grater on the coarse drum makes light work of it.
  • Make three at once. Overnight oats keep happily for up to three days in the fridge, so Sunday night can sort out Monday to Wednesday.

Can you eat cinnamon overnight oats warm?

Yes. Take the lid off, tip the oats into a bowl and microwave for about a minute, stirring halfway. Add a splash of milk first if they've thickened up a lot.

Which oats are best?

Rolled (porridge) oats. Jumbo oats work too but stay chewier. Avoid quick-cook or instant oats, which go mushy overnight.
